Sony and AMD are working together to enhance the PlayStation 5 Pro’s upscaling capabilities, incorporating improvements from FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4). According to PS5 architect Mark Cerny, this upgrade is a key aspect of the Amethyst collaboration between the two companies.
Cerny explained to Digital Foundry that FSR 4’s neural network and training methodology surpass Sony’s existing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology. This advancement is expected to be integrated into games launching from 2026 onward, with ongoing efforts to adapt the feature to the PS5 Pro’s architecture.
Internally, the update is called PSSR 2, highlighting Sony’s goal of leveraging AMD’s expertise to improve the console’s visual stability and overall performance in future titles.
While specific compatibility details haven’t been revealed, more information is expected in upcoming announcements from Sony.
Cerny also expressed confidence in the PS5 Pro’s Machine Learning capabilities, emphasizing its performance peak of 300 8-bit TOPS, which aligns with AMD’s latest GPUs.
Beyond upscaling improvements, the console can benefit from Ray Tracing advancements during AMD’s reveal of RDNA 4 GPUs, a demonstration showcased FSR 4’s ability to integrate neural tracking and rendering—features that could be incorporated into Sony’s most powerful console yet.
FSR 4 with PS5 Pro
AMD introduced FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) during CES 2025, alongside the launch of the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT graphics cards based on RDNA 4, Nvidia’s latest GPU architecture. The new technology leverages hardware-based Machine Learning to enhance games’ visual performance and lighting effects.
While the exact integration of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) with FSR 4 remains unclear, its implementation could significantly boost the PS5 Pro—both in terms of graphical fidelity and sales performance, which have so far been lower than Sony anticipated.
Considering this technology is expected to roll out in 2026, it will likely be featured in major upcoming titles such as GTA 6 and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Sony’s continued collaboration with AMD suggests that the PS5 Pro could leverage these advancements to compete more aggressively in the high-end gaming market.
