Since its global release on November 7th for $479, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D has quickly sold out in major stores across the US, Europe, and South Korea. In countries like Germany and Austria, restocks are expected by November 12th. Meanwhile, scalpers have seized the opportunity, purchasing units in bulk and reselling them at inflated prices—sometimes as much as double the original price.
In the US, popular retailers such as Newegg, Amazon, BestBuy, Microcenter, and B&H have already run out of stock. On eBay, listings for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D start at $658 and can go as high as $999. This scalping practice is hardly new, especially when high-demand products like this processor become available.
AMD’s general manager of computing and graphics, Jack Huynh, shared his excitement for the launch on Twitter, posting images of long lines outside electronics stores just before the product hit the shelves.
Great demand for the new king of games
The high demand for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D comes as no surprise, as global reviews before its release unanimously declared it the new best gaming processor available. The CPU, which features AMD’s second-generation 3D V-Cache technology, not only outperformed its predecessor, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, but also surpassed Intel’s high-end Core i9-14900K. Although the i9-14900K is not a direct competitor to the Ryzen 7 series, it struggled to keep up with the X3D processors.
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the first processor to support expanded overclocking with 3D V-Cache technology. While overclocking was possible with the Ryzen 7000X3D, it had certain limitations. With changes to the processor’s die, those limitations have been removed, allowing the Ryzen 7 9800X3D to reach an impressive 6.9 GHz, significantly boosting gaming performance while keeping power consumption around 100W.
