Tesla Cybertruck Undergoes 5th recall in less than 1 year

By Aayush

Tesla’s Cybertruck has faced its fifth recall within a year of its launch. On Thursday (03), the company, led by Elon Musk, announced that 27,185 units of the electric pickup truck have a visibility issue with the rear camera, necessitating maintenance.

The problem stems from a software bug in a recent over-the-air update. It affects how the reversing camera’s image is displayed on the Cybertruck’s screen. In some cases, the screen remains frozen or completely white for up to 8 seconds when the vehicle is in reverse gear. U.S. traffic laws mandate that the rear camera display must show within 2 seconds to ensure safety.

Tesla acknowledged the issue in a statement to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), saying, “The delay in displaying the rear camera reduces the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle and increases the risk of accidents.”

The flaw affects Cybertruck models produced between November 13, 2023, and September 14, 2024, which have a specific operating mode. This mode was not addressed during the recent update’s development, leading to delays and screen freezing when using the rear camera.

Cybertruck recall history

Since its launch, the Tesla Cybertruck has faced numerous controversies, with issues ranging from rusting bodywork to challenges related to its towing capacity. These ongoing problems have fueled significant criticism of the electric pickup.

The latest recall marks the fifth since the Cybertruck’s debut in November 2023. Over 2 million units have already required emergency maintenance for a wide range of defects.

Earlier this year, in June, owners had to address problems with trim pieces coming loose and malfunctioning windshield wipers. In April, another recall was issued after an issue with accelerator pedals sticking was discovered.

To address the current reversing camera glitch, Tesla has rolled out a free over-the-air software update, allowing owners to fix the issue themselves. Additionally, the company has promised to notify all affected Cybertruck owners by mail by November 25th.
