Tesla cars are widely recognized for their advanced technology and innovation, but they are not without flaws. According to recent data, Tesla is among the automotive brands with the highest number of fatal traffic accidents in the United States despite its cutting-edge features.

The findings come from iSeeCars, a platform focused on the automotive sector, analyzing data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) between 2018 and 2022. The data, compiled by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), revealed some concerning statistics.

While no specific Tesla model ranked among the top five most dangerous cars, the brand had the highest average rate of fatal accidents: one for every 178 million kilometers driven. Following Tesla on the list were Kia, Buick, Dodge, and Hyundai.

For context, the study also found that, on average, a fatal accident occurs every 357 million kilometers driven in the United States. This makes Tesla’s rate of fatal accidents significantly higher than other brands, raising questions about safety factors despite their advanced technology.

What are the “most dangerous” cars in the USA?

The Tesla models that contributed to the brand’s position at the top of the list for fatal accidents in the U.S. were the Model Y, ranking sixth with a fatal accident rate 3.7 times higher than the national average, and the Model S, which placed 21st with a rate twice the average.

Despite these numbers, other vehicles have significantly higher fatal accident rates than Tesla models when driven across the United States. Below are the top five cars with the highest rates of fatal accidents per billion kilometers traveled:

  1. Hyundai Venue: 13.9 per billion kilometers (4.9x the national average)
  2. Chevrolet Corvette: 13.6 per billion kilometers (4.8x)
  3. Mitsubishi Mirage: 13.6 per billion kilometers (4.8x)
  4. Porsche 911: 13.2 per billion kilometers (4.6x)
  5. Honda HR-V Hybrid: 13.2 per billion kilometers (4.6x)

These figures highlight that while Tesla’s rates are concerning, other vehicles with even higher fatal accident rates are on the road.
