TikTok blocks beauty filters for under 18s due to mental health

By Aayush

TikTok has announced new restrictions on beauty filters for users under 18, aiming to protect the mental health of teenagers and children. The decision comes as these filters have been shown to impact self-esteem and body image.

The update will roll out globally in the coming weeks. Alongside the restriction, TikTok will provide more transparency about the filters used, showing how they alter appearances. In its statement, the company cited research highlighting concerns from parents and teens about the psychological effects of these filters, especially when viewers are unaware that a video has been digitally altered.

This policy targets filters that modify physical appearance, such as adding makeup, slimming facial features, or changing eye color. However, playful filters, like those adding animal ears or creating exaggerated, humorous effects, will still be available.

Caution with children under 13

TikTok is also stepping up efforts to enforce its age restrictions by removing accounts belonging to users under 13, the platform’s minimum age requirement. According to the company, approximately six million accounts are deleted monthly for failing to meet this guideline.

To enhance moderation, TikTok has started testing advanced machine learning technology designed to identify and suspend accounts belonging to underage users effectively. This initiative aims to ensure a safer environment for all users while upholding the platform’s policies.
