TikTok enhances user interactions by introducing several new features in its direct messaging (DM) system. The most significant addition is the ability to create group chats that can include up to 32 participants, facilitating more extensive conversations within the app.
Additionally, TikTok is rolling out custom stickers in DMs. This new feature allows users to design and send personalized stickers, offering a more fun and creative way to communicate within the app. These enhancements are part of TikTok’s ongoing efforts to enrich user experience and foster community engagement.
Group chat on TikTok
TikTok’s group chat feature offers a versatile way for users to engage with each other, allowing up to 32 participants in a single conversation. Users can initiate a group chat by selecting the chat option in their inbox and choosing “more options” or by sharing a video with multiple users, creating a group chat from that interaction.
To ensure safety for younger users, TikTok has implemented several protective measures for teenagers. Here’s a breakdown:
- Age Restrictions: Users aged 13 to 15 cannot access the group chat or direct message features.
- Mutual Friend Requirement for Ages 16-17: For teenagers aged 16 and 17, group chats are only accessible if the participants are mutual friends. This means both parties must follow each other.
- Invitation and Approval: If a 16 or 17-year-old receives an invitation to join a group, they can only enter if there is at least one mutual friend already in the group. Furthermore, joining the group requires proactive acceptance by the teenager.
- Control Over Group Membership: When a teenager creates a group, they must manually review and approve each new participant, giving them more control over who joins the conversation.
These features and restrictions aim to create a safer environment for younger users on the platform while allowing them to participate in group interactions responsibly.
Custom Stickers on TikTok
TikTok has introduced a new feature that lets you use custom stickers in direct messages. To send a sticker, just go to your chat, tap the emoji button in the message bar, and open the sticker store. From there, you can pick stickers from the “Video Stickers” or “Sticker Sets” tabs.
In the “Video Stickers” section, you can choose a sticker and send it directly to your chat. You can filter stickers by popularity, newness, or trending status. To save a sticker to your favorites, tap the star icon next to it. If you want more details about a sticker, just long-press on it to see all stickers from the same creator, watch the original video, or report it.
For sticker sets, you can save them by tapping the “Add” button. Once saved, the sticker set will appear in the stickers tab, where you can use it in your direct messages. You can also organize or remove saved sticker sets as you like.
TikTok also lets you create your own stickers from videos. To do this, go to a direct chat, tap the emoji button, and choose the favorites tab. Here, you can select a video from your liked, posted, or favorite videos to make a sticker. You can edit the sticker by adding text or cropping the video. Once you’re done, you can make your sticker public for others to use, or keep it private. Created stickers will be available in your favorites tab and on your profile, where you can send them in messages, view them, or add them to the sticker store.
