ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has launched a new AI-powered video generation app called Jimeng AI, which is available exclusively in China for Android and iOS. This app is designed to compete with OpenAI’s Sora, which also creates realistic videos using artificial intelligence.
Jimeng AI functions similarly to other “Video ChatGPT” apps, where users input a text command, and the AI generates a video from scratch. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the app was launched on the Play Store on July 31 and has just become available on the Chinese App Store. Additionally, a desktop version has been available since May.
As the platform is currently limited to the Chinese market, few demonstration videos are available. However, reports indicate that the app can create static images and short videos that are up to three seconds long.
Race for Video AIs
Video generation is rapidly emerging as a major trend in the global AI market. Following the announcement of OpenAI’s Sora, several companies introduced models capable of creating realistic videos.
In Asia, for example, Kuaishou, the company behind the short video app Kwai, launched Kling AI for video creation. TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has joined the competition with its new tool, Jimeng AI.
Other noteworthy solutions include Luma AI’s Dream Machine, which has produced impressive results in its demos, and Runway’s Gen-3 Alpha. While OpenAI’s Sora hasn’t been released to the public yet, the company has confirmed that it will be available by the end of the year.
