A Reddit user, awirstam, has sparked nostalgia by transforming the Windows 11 interface to resemble the iconic look of Windows 95, the operating system released in 1995. The modification is not limited to changing window aesthetics but includes classic gray and blue tones reminiscent of the 1990s Microsoft era.
The impressive overhaul extends to third-party applications like Telegram, Discord, and Steam, giving them a retro makeover to match the old-school Windows identity. Furthermore, attention to detail is evident in the desktop icons: for instance, Edge is represented by the classic AOL icon, while Telegram has been given the logo of the defunct ICQ messenger. Other Windows 95 and 98 icons are also featured, creating a cohesive vintage look across the system.
Work included 5 different apps.
The nostalgic transformation of Windows 11 into a Windows 95 look was achieved using a combination of several tools, some of which are paid, as the Reddit user awirstam explained. Key applications used for the Windows interface overhaul included Window Blinds from Stardock, Retrobar, and Winaero Tweaker. For modifying the appearance of apps like Steam and Discord, specific custom modifications were applied to match the retro theme.
This work allows users to enjoy the classic Windows aesthetic while benefiting from the modern capabilities of Windows 11. Unlike the old days, you won’t experience slow-loading pages or the infamous dial-up internet connection sounds—it’s a seamless blend of nostalgia and efficiency.
