Have you ever watched a live YouTube stream and noticed those highlighted messages in the comments? Those are called Super Chats, a way for viewers to financially support and reward their favorite content creators.
What is YouTube Super Chat
Super Chats act like tips or donations that get highlighted and pinned in the live chat during a creator’s stream or premiere. When you purchase a Super Chat, you can enter a message displayed prominently in bright colors for the streamer and all viewers to see.
For creators, Super Chats provides a means for their most dedicated fans to help financially support their work on YouTube. It’s an added form of monetization beyond just traditional advertising revenue. Fans can choose precisely how much to “tip” based on set price points.
How to pay for a Super Chat on YouTube
- Open a live stream or YouTube premiere;
- Open the chat and tap the dollar sign icon in the comment box. The procedure can be done in the mobile app and the browser;
- Then, choose between sending a Super Chat or a Super Sticker;
- Drag to the side to select an amount, enter the comment, and confirm the purchase to send it.
YouTube uses payment methods that are registered to your Google account. For cell phones, it is also possible to pay through the Google Play Store or App Store.
How to enable Super Chat on the YouTube channel
- Open studio.youtube.com in the browser and click on the “Monetization” tab on your channel;
- Then select the “Supers” tab. (To be eligible for Super Chat and Super Stickers, first meet the minimum requirements for fan funding features. Then confirm you fit the other criteria outlined below for Super Chat & Super Stickers:)
- Click on “Get Started” and accept the product terms and conditions;
- The resource will be added to the channel. On the “Supers” screen, activate the “Super Chat” and “Super Stickers” options.
Who can receive Super Chat on YouTube?
This feature is available to channels that earn money on YouTube, typically through the YouTube Partner Program. It would be best if you also were at least 18 years old to use it.
However, Super Chat and Super Stickers can’t be used on certain types of videos. They won’t work on videos that are age-restricted, unlisted, private, or tagged as child-friendly. Plus, they’re unavailable on videos where live chat is turned off.
