WhatsApp Introduces Group Descriptions for Easy Identification

By Aayush

WhatsApp is now allowing community administrators to add descriptions to group chats. This feature, initially rolled out to a limited number of users, was officially distributed to the general public on Monday (12), according to WABetaInfo. The new capability aims to make it easier for users to understand the purpose of the conversations they join.

Previously available only in the Beta version of the app, this update lets administrators of groups within a community add a description to clarify the chat’s purpose, lay out the rules, and provide other important information. Before this, the option was only offered for groups outside of communities.

When setting up a new group channel, the option to add a description can be found just below the conversation name field. Additionally, administrators can add descriptions to existing chats by editing the group’s profile in the settings.

Although the feature has begun rolling out, not all users have access to it yet. It is expected to be available to more users in the coming weeks across both Android and iOS platforms.

Event closing time

Following the introduction of group chat descriptions, WhatsApp has also updated its feature for creating events within group conversations. Over the weekend, Meta released a button in the Beta version of WhatsApp that allows users to include an end time for events. This feature is designed to provide an estimated end time for activities like parties and meetings.

Currently, this new event feature is available only to users in the Beta version of the app, with no announced timeline for a wider release to all users.
