WhatsApp, a favorite messaging app among Users, clarified why it requires users to have a minimum operating system version on their devices. According to Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, phones must run at least iOS 12 or Android 5.0 to continue using the app.
This update is meant to enhance user security and ensure access to newer features, which older system versions can’t support. Meta noted that these changes are based on routine security checks and compatibility assessments, aimed at providing a better experience and maintaining app stability.
What the Meta says
“Devices and software evolve constantly. That’s why we regularly review which operating systems are compatible with WhatsApp and update requirements accordingly,” the company explains on its official blog.
This process is essential to ensure the app maintains the expected level of security and performance while also supporting new features and enhancements for a better user experience.
“Every year, we analyze which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. It is possible that these devices do not have the latest security updates or do not include functionality necessary to operate WhatsApp”, explains the company in Messenger Help Center.
Many of WhatsApp’s newer features, such as enhanced privacy settings and improved call quality, rely on technologies that aren’t supported by versions older than iOS 12 or Android 5.0.
To avoid compatibility issues, WhatsApp advises users to regularly check for software updates. On Android, you can update your system by going to “Settings,” selecting “System,” and tapping on “Software updates.” For iPhone users, head to “Settings,” choose “General,” and then tap on “Software Update.”
Meta also cautions that failing to update to the latest required versions may result in losing access to key WhatsApp features, including messaging, voice and video calls, and file sharing.
