Apple’s upcoming updates for iPhones and iPads, set to be released next year, will not be available for all currently supported devices. According to a report, while Apple typically provides software updates for at least five years, often extending this to six or even seven years, not all devices will receive the next major updates.
As reported by iPhoneSoft, iPhones currently running iOS 18.x will be upgraded to iOS 19. However, the situation is different for iPads. Not all iPad models that are still supported will receive the next major update to iPadOS 19. This information comes from an anonymous source who claims to have direct knowledge of Apple’s plans.
Apple’s iOS 19 update will be available for a wide range of iPhone models, including the following:
- iPhone SE 2, 3, 4
- iPhone 17, 17 Air, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max
- iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max
- iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
- iPhone XS, XS Max, XR
The hardware of some iPads is probably too weak
As for iPads, specific models will no longer receive the update due to hardware limitations. The A10 chip in the seventh-generation iPad (2019) and the A10X in the second-generation iPad Pro (2017) are not powerful enough to support iPadOS 19. To be eligible for the update, devices must have at least an A12 chip. The following iPads will receive the update:
- iPad mini (5th generation or later)
- iPad (8th generation or later)
- iPad Air (3rd generation or later)
- iPad Pro (3rd generation or later)
While details on the new features of iOS 19 and iPadOS 19 remain unclear, the updates are expected to be smaller than originally planned due to delays in the development of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. The updates are likely to include new functionalities related to Apple Intelligence. Apple is anticipated to reveal iOS 19 and iPadOS 19 at WWDC in June 2025.
