While Windows 11 often takes the spotlight, we must not forget about Windows 10, the world’s most widely used desktop operating system. It continues receiving monthly updates, including security patches, bug fixes, and occasionally small new features.

Today, we’re discussing the update KB5040427, which brings Windows 10 to version 19044.4651 for users on version 20H2 and version 19045.4651 for those on 21H2 or 22H2.

Windows 10 (KB5040427): What’s new and fixes

This update includes all the new features from the optional June 25 patch (KB5039299) and the necessary security improvements. Here’s a list of the new features:

1. Enhanced Copilot Experience: The Copilot website is now pinned to the taskbar and functions like an app, allowing users to resize and move the window for a classic app experience. For existing Windows 10 PCs, this feature’s availability and delivery method will vary. It will be rolled out gradually, so it may not be available to all users immediately.

This update brings several important fixes and improvements:

2. Taskbar Shortcut List: Fixed an issue where errors occurred when completing actions on an application’s shortcut list, which appears when you right-click an app on the taskbar or Start Menu.

3. Japanese Input Method Editor (IME): Resolved an issue where the candidate window for the default Japanese IME would stop responding unexpectedly and revert to a previous composition state.

4. Right-Click Context Menu: Addressed a known issue where right-clicking in some applications resulted in an “Open with” dialog box instead of the selected task. This also affected icons on the taskbar and Start Menu.

5. MSIX Applications: Fixed a problem where applications packaged in MSIX format and installed from an HTTPS URL would not open if the download wasn’t completed, corrupting the package.

6. Mobile Device Management (MDM): Updated the MDM client to send more device details during enrollment, helping the MDM service to identify the device model and manufacturer.

7. DirectComposition: Corrected an issue where a brief flash of triangles or boxes appeared on the screen in browsers like Microsoft Edge and other applications.

8. Country and Operator Configuration Asset (COSA): Updated profiles for certain mobile operators.

9. Hibernation: Fixed an issue preventing systems from resuming from hibernation after BitLocker was enabled.

10. Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC): Resolved a bug causing unassigned WDAC policies to be copied to the EFI disk partition, which is reserved for signed policies.

11. Folder Context Menu: Fixed an issue where the command to remove items from a folder’s context menu would add items instead, notably when a third-party service implemented a synchronization feature.
