Microsoft is planning to make Bitlocker device encryption a default feature on PCs starting with the Windows 11 24H2 update. According to a report from The Verge, any new, clean installation of Windows 11 after the update will have Bitlocker encryption automatically enabled to safeguard device data.
Bitlocker encryption creates a 48-digit recovery code, which is then linked to the Microsoft account used to sign into the system. This encryption protects the entire storage drive where Windows is installed, helping to secure personal data in case the device is lost or stolen.
While Bitlocker has been available in the Pro, Enterprise, and Education versions of Windows 11, Microsoft plans to expand this security feature to the Home edition, commonly used on personal devices.
To facilitate this wider adoption, Microsoft is lowering some of the hardware requirements for Bitlocker to function. This includes removing the need for technologies like the Hardware Security Test Interface (HSTI) and the Modern Standby sleep mode.
The feature may be disabled.
Bitlocker device encryption will be turned on by default on all new computers or PCs that undergo a clean install of Windows 11 24H2, but there is also a workaround to turn it off:
- Open settings with administrator account;
- Go to “Privacy and Security”;
- Select “Device Encryption”;
- Uncheck the option to disable it.
Windows 11 24H2 is coming
The 24H2 update is the major annual Windows update that introduces significant new features to the operating system. While computers receive regular updates throughout the year, the “H2” updates are particularly noteworthy because they bundle multiple new features into a single release.
The 24H2 update is available primarily on PCs with Arm architecture, focusing on integrating new AI capabilities. For older machines or those with lower specifications, the update will include tailored adjustments, such as the ability to use an Android phone’s camera as a webcam and support for emerging technologies like Wi-Fi 7 and USB4 2.0 on select devices.
Microsoft has not yet confirmed a release date for the 24H2 update on all compatible PCs, but it traditionally rolls out major updates between September and October each year.
