On Thursday (3), YouTube announced new updates to YouTube Shorts, its short-form video feature. The biggest change is that users can now upload up to three minutes of content. Additionally, YouTube has enhanced the Shorts player with new templates and introduced a Shorts trends page for mobile users.
These updates are part of YouTube’s strategy to better compete with TikTok, which has allowed videos up to 10 minutes since 2022 and began testing 60-minute videos this year. The extended video length on YouTube Shorts will be available starting October 15.
New features
One of the standout new features of YouTube Shorts is the introduction of customizable templates designed to help creators and users quickly jump on trending topics. This move is similar to how TikTok and CapCut work together, allowing users to transition between the two apps to engage with trends easily.
With YouTube’s new tool, there’s no need for a second app. Users can tap the “Remix” option and select “Use this template” to create their videos directly within Shorts.
Additionally, mobile users will now have access to a new page highlighting popular trends in their country, offering inspiration for their content. These updates began rolling out today on the YouTube app for mobile devices.
