We’ve all been there—scrolling endlessly through streaming platforms, unable to decide what to watch. Netflix users know this struggle well, and researchers have even coined the term “Choice Paralysis” to describe this modern affliction. Now, Google appears to be addressing a similar issue on YouTube by testing a “Play Something” random play button to ease decision fatigue.
While YouTube’s vast collection of user-generated content makes this issue less severe compared to platforms with curated libraries, the sheer volume of options can still overwhelm viewers, leading to the same paralysis. Although Google hasn’t released official data about this behavior, it seems the company has noticed a need to tackle this challenge.
The solution being tested is simple: a floating action button (FAB) labeled “Play Something.” Designed to be intuitive and low-friction, the button aims to make it easier for users to jump straight into videos without dealing with YouTube’s frequent autoplay, suggestions, or subscription nudges. When tapped, it launches a Shorts player or starts regular-length videos, depending on the user’s preferences.
According to 9to5Google, the button was spotted during testing and appears near the bottom of the screen. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time it’s been seen. In May 2023, a Reddit user reported a “Play Something” banner, and Android Police researchers identified a similar feature later that year.
With over a year of testing behind it, it seems likely that YouTube is preparing to release the feature, at least for public trials in select regions. For now, though, there’s no official confirmation of when or if it will roll out widely. But for those of us caught in the paralysis of choice, this could be a welcome relief.
